  • Once a year, in late May or early June, the Yard transform itself into a giant celebratory arena. Tens of thousands pack into Tercentenary Theatre for the day for which they have been waiting for years - graduation. Amid the pomp, tradition, Latin orations and other festivities, there is also a commencement speech. The day prior to Commencement is known as "Class Day." One of the highlights of Class Day is that the Senior Class Committee invite another notable speaker. The Class Day speaker is usually more lighthearted than the Commencement speaker selected by the University (though in my year, for some reason they choose Chairman of the Federal Reserve Ben Bernanke to regale us...). Several of these Class Day and Commencement speeches have gone down in Harvard (and world) history. This Treks brings you some memorable Class Day and Commencement addresses. If you wish to hear the speeches, rather than just read them, take the following Trek: "May Your Hats Fly as High as Your Dreams": Great Harvard Commencement Speeches (Text and Audio).
